Art I: Foundations of Studio Art
Centennial High School, Fall 2013
In this studio art course students will be challenged both creatively and intellectually while being introduced to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Art students will gain basic technical skills as they participate in the creative process using a wide variety of media to include drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art disciplines. Students will gain an understanding of the world of the Visual Artist through analysis, exploration, experimentation, collaboration, and reflection. Most lessons align with Common Core State Standards, and include components that address mathematical, literacy or STEM goals.
• STUDIO EXPERIENCES: will involve the exploration and experimentation of a wide variety of media to include pencil, chalk pastel, oil pastel, pen and ink, marker, tempera and watercolor paints, and collage. Students will also work three-dimensionally with clay and plaster to create craft works and sculptures.
• ART HISTORY: Each unit will begin with the study of a particular art movement, artist or design element found in our everyday surroundings. Often a theme will be explored as students examine a variety of artistic traditions from around the world. Students will take notes during Power-Points and video presentations. We will discuss and critique works by master artists and former students. Occasionally, students will read related articles, complete online research and questionnaires.
• SUPPLIES: You are expected to come to class each day, prepared with the following required materials: several #2 pencils, mechanical pencils, an eraser and a set of colored pencils (12 colors…please do not bring the erasable kind; they do not need to be brand new!)
• EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to act RESPECTFULLY towards all classmates and their teacher, to behave appropriately according to school guidelines, properly handle tools/materials and use your class time well. You should clean up your own work area and participate in the general clean up of the studio. Come to class ON TIME, ready to work, prepared with completed assignments and the required materials. Cooperate, participate, be prompt and prepared. Excessive tardiness and absences will result in an administrative referral.
The school wide policy states that THE USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE NOT PERMITTED DURING CLASS TIME (cell phones, IPODS, MP3 players and other electronic devices). ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES will be confiscated if used during class and forwarded to the front office; your parents will be contacted by the administration.
Students may not leave the art room at any time without permission. You may only use the bathroom during work time, not during presentations or testing.
